Continuing Education for Physicians Delivered Online

online education doctors The Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions from the winter, 2010 issue, indicated that 50% of continuing education (CME) used by physicians will be delivered via the internet by 2016, an increase of over the 9% delivered via the internet in 2008. Historically, physician CME is delivered by live meetings and conferences prepared by academic centers and professional societies. The new study finds that online CME is prepared by commercial education companies that distribute to the physicians for free or for a very low rate. These analyses are based on 11 years of data and show the growth rate for online CME is very established.

A 2009 review of 46 studies by the US Department of Education found, “on average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”

Macmillan, a major textbook publisher introduced a new service that will let faculty members customize digital textbooks. Professors can add and subtract chapters and rewrite individual sentences and paragraphs. While course packs that allow faculty members to build customized digital or print materials for courses are common, this.system may go further in allowing professors to overhaul a single existing work.

Registration is up for Graduate School

2009 marks a GRE registration record. The Educational Testing Service (ETC) announced March 1, 2010 that total registration of 675,000 is up 8 percent. When the economy takes a hit, more undergraduates consider graduate school. The ETC also has gains in minority test-takers. As expected, the number of applicants taking Graduate Management Test Admission (GMAT) has also had a noteable rise.
